Christmas Drinks From Uruguay

Posted by Bacchus in Wines December 21, 2015

Who knew? Uruguayan wines make an excellent choice for Christmas. The proximity of the Atlantic Ocean is a major influence on the style of wines from this South American country, and although they tend to have a richness and sweetness of fruit associated with the southern hemisphere, this is allied to a fine tannic and/or acidic structure more typically found in classic regions of France. In the best examples there is also an elegance and balance that can often be lacking in wines from other ‘new world’ wines. The four examples listed below are currently available at Spirited Wines and all offer something interesting for the festive season.

Vinedo de los Vientos Estival White Blend 2012

An unusual three-way blend of Gewurtztraminer, Moscato and Chardonnay. It has a rich, floral and expressive nose, redolent of a sweet wine, with notes of golden raisin, ripe peach, pineapple and honey. There is a refreshing zip to the palate with a bitter grapefruit-like twist to the finish. Ripe citrus and exotic fruit with a touch of ginger spice. Good balance and intriguing complexity. Recently selected as one of the top 15 white wines in South America according to Decanter magazine. To enjoy with salmon, turkey, goose, chicken or even pork.

Bodegones del Sur Marselan Vineyard Select 2013

The Marselan grape is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache and this is a very approachable example. Packed full of juicy berry fruit - raspberries and cherries - with a crushed floral aroma and gentle peppery lift. Soft, quite light and a nicely rounded finish with just a suggestion of oak. Good fun and a real crowd-pleaser. Just great to enjoy with a variety of food and works very well with curry, or try with the turkey or beef.

De Lucca Tannat/Merlot 2011

A slightly wild, rustic character to this wine, coming from the Tannat. Darkly fruited with lots of bitter cocoa, prune, molasses, woody spice and a suggestion of blueberry. Plenty of fine tannins, with the plummy Merlot offering a slightly softer edge. Decent finish lingering on a note of dark chocolate. Solid structure to age further but drinking just fine now, and made to partner beef, but would work with the Christmas day meal in general.

Vinedo de los Vientos Alcyone Dessert Tannat N/V

An extraordinary fusion of different sweet winemaking techniques to create an intense experience. First to regale the nose is sweet vanilla, followed by chocolate ice-cream, hazelnut and cherries dipped in milk chocolate. This theme continues onto the palate - rich, luscious even, and silky, with just a suggestion of tannin on the finish keeping the sweetness in check. Simply enjoy as a dessert on its own, or try with chocolate, Christmas pudding, mince pies or biscuits.

Grab a bottle and add a little Uruguayan flavour to your Christmas.

A festive cheers to everyone!
