Once upon a time a country entered the UK wine market and blew the competition away. Here was affordable, readily available wine that was full of fruit and character. Sadly an obsession with the cheaper end of the market meant that Australia eventually started to lose its appeal. Excessive alcohol and oak was not what a new generation of drinkers wanted. Mercifully they have taken note and today there is a growing emphasis on regionality and better balance in the wines. They are still recognisably Australian but in many cases continue to rival the best offerings from any other country.
