For many the only experience of Greek wine may be tackling the Retsina and sharp table wines in cheap tavernas while on holiday. Fortunately this is not the full story- there are many fantastic world-class wines produced today, with the best making good use of a multitude of indigenous varieties that offer a distinct character. If you haven’t tried Assyrtiko from the volcanic island of Santorini, or enjoyed the rich-fruited style of an Agiorgitiko you should definitely seek them out. They are never particularly cheap but are almost invariably very good. Indeed it could be argued that for the quality they offer better value than more famous names.
