When most people think of North American wine they think of California. Wines of interest are produced in other areas though, and the quality can be just as good. Until recently wines from the USA generally belonged to one of two camps- generic, mass-produced and cheap, or expensive and exclusive blockbusters. Fortunately it is now possible to get a large variety of wines at sensible prices that display good regional character and intriguing complexity. Historically the American palate favoured fruit-forward, rich wines, yet even here there is a growing consensus that full-throttle wines are not the only way- a surprising amount of restraint and finesse can now be found.
