Austria is a country that is often overlooked but for one grape variety — Grüner Veltliner. This classy white grape variety is almost exclusively grown here and has helped to put Austria firmly on the vinous map. Riesling, Pinot Noir and other varieties also feature, yet it is the complexity and ability to age of this particular variety that provides the most excitement. A tendency for over-zealous use of new oak has mercifully given away to a purer expression of what the local regions can offer.
