The Andes mountain range largely defines what Argentine wine is all about. The major wine-producing regions, including Mendoza, are all nestled on its broad shoulders. Irrigation is provided by the snow melt, and the high altitude provides a quality of fresh fruit and structural finesse that would be impossible lower down on the hot plateaus. Although Malbec is the undeniable calling card of this country, variety and further interest is provided by Bonarda, Tannat and Torrontés, as well as firm favourites like Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Syrah.
