A variety that is native to the south west of France, although it has made a second home in Uruguay and Argentina. It has largely come to wider attention because of its high polyphenol content which is said to be good for vascular health. It is often blended with other grapes in France to help tame its naturally high tannin level. Examples from South America tend to be a little lighter and more approachable.
